April 2024 Health Awareness Initiatives

National Health Observances (NHOs) are special days, weeks, or months dedicated to raising awareness about important health topics.

Each month, various health initiatives are promoted to increase awareness of the cause and improve health across the country.

The health awareness initiatives in April 2024 include, but are not limited to:

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome Awareness Month: An annual observance that aims to raise public awareness about Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). According to the American College of Gastroenterology, IBS affects 10-15% of adults in the US.
  • National Donate Life Month: This initiative is held to raise awareness and encourage people to become organ, tissue, and blood donors.
  • National Interprofessional Healthcare Month: Celebrating the importance of interprofessional collaboration in healthcare, and highlights the value of teamwork among healthcare professionals.
  • National Sarcoidosis Awareness Month: The American Lung Association, the CHEST Foundation, and Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research (FSR) have partnered in this national awareness campaign to encourage people living with sarcoidosis to take a proactive role in their treatment plan.
  • Parkinson’s Awareness Month: More than one million Americans live with Parkinson’s disease, and this initiative brings attention to the life-changing disease that is on the rise and connects people to critical resources.
  • Stress Awareness Month: This initiative has been held every April since 1992 and is a time when healthcare professionals across the country join forces to increase public awareness about both the causes and cures for the modern stress epidemic.
  • Testicular Cancer Awareness Month: Testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer in men aged 15-25. When caught and treated early, it is highly treatable.
  • World Immunization Week: Celebrated April 24-30, this campaign aims to highlight the importance that immunization plays in global health and to raise awareness about the protection that immunizations provide from vaccine-preventable diseases.

Please keep in mind that these initiatives may vary from year to year, and new observances may be added.
